Creating an Awesome Treasure Hunt! (Dare we say EPIC!)

Creating an Awesome Treasure Hunt for Adults and/or Kids.

Tips, tricks & ideas to help make your next treasure hunt an epic adventure & success!

A good treasure hunt typically includes a theme, a clear set of instructions, a variety of clues that gradually lead to the final treasure, and challenging, but solvable puzzles or riddles along the way.

But you can also incorporate many other elements that can help make a treasure hunt more fun and engaging include incorporating local landmarks or history, using different types of clues (such as riddles, maps, or word puzzles), and providing small prizes or rewards at different stages of the hunt. Additionally, it’s important to have a clear ending point or ultimate “treasure” that participants can discover once they’ve solved all the clues, which serves as a culmination of the hunt.

Treasure hunts are a fun and exciting way to get participants involved in learning and problem-solving. Whether you’re looking to create a treasure hunt for a school project, a birthday party, to surprise a loved one with a special gift or just for fun, here are some key elements that you’ll need to include, or at least consider, to make it a success.

Key Elements of a Successful Treasure Hunt:

  1. Clear instructions: Make sure that all participants understand the rules and the objective of the treasure hunt. Clearly explain the format, the starting point, and the time limit. This will prevent confusion and ensure that everyone is on the same page.
  2. Gradual clues: A good treasure hunt should include a series of clues that gradually lead to the final treasure. These clues should be challenging but solvable, and should build on each other. This will keep your treasure hunters engaged and excited about solving the clues.
  3. Different types of clues: To keep the treasure hunt interesting, use a variety of clues such as riddles, word puzzles, maps, and hidden messages. See our other post HERE regarding puzzle ideas.
  4. Have a clear ending point: Make sure to have a clear ending point or “treasure” that participants can discover once they’ve solved all the clues and puzzles. This could be a hidden box with a prize or a special location.
  5. Prizes or rewards: Give small prizes or rewards along the way to keep participants motivated and excited. These can be small trinkets, stickers, or even just a small amount of candy. Make sure to have a bigger prize or reward for the final treasure.
  6. A Theme: Consider having a themed treasure hunt that aligns with a specific topic, such as pirates, ancient Egypt, or space exploration. This will add an extra layer of excitement and engagement for the participants.
  7. Hints: One of the changes we have implemented in our treasure hunts over the last couple of years is putting the participants in charge of when or if they receive hints. We like to keep the hunts challenging – but don’t want them to become overwhelming. If someone is starting to get frustrated – they probably aren’t having fun anymore!
  8. A Host/Master of the Hunt: An elaborate treasure hunt can get confusing pretty fast – even for its creator!  So have a cheat sheet / overview of the hunt that is easily accessible to you as you are running the hunt.  This can help you make sure the participants stay on course and provide and assistance if necessary.
  9. Incorporate local landmarks or history: If the treasure hunt is taking place in a specific location, try to incorporate local landmarks or history into the clues. This will not only make the treasure hunt more fun and relatable, but it will also educate kids about their community.
  10. Age-appropriate: Keep in mind the age group of the participants. Make sure the clues and puzzles are challenging but not too difficult for your target audience.
  11. Safety first: Plan the treasure hunt in a safe area, where there are no hazards or dangerous routes. Stay away from busy roads. Remember, participants might not be focused on safety  during the thrill of the hunt – so plan accordingly. Also, if it is a treasure hunt for kids, make sure that there is adult supervision at all times.
  12. Encourage teamwork: One of the most important aspects of a treasure hunt is encouraging teamwork. Divide your participants into small groups and have them work together to solve the clues and find the treasure. This will not only make the treasure hunt more fun but also help your treasure hunters to develop teamwork skills.
  13. Make it interactive: Incorporate interactive elements into the treasure hunt to keep everyone engaged and excited. For example, you can include a scavenger hunt element, where participants have to find specific items or take pictures of certain landmarks. You can also include physical challenges, such as obstacle courses or puzzles that need to be solved in order to find the next clue.
  14. Use technology: Incorporate technology into the treasure hunt by using QR codes, online puzzles, or even a virtual scavenger hunt. This will make the treasure hunt more engaging and interactive for participants who are tech-savvy. We did this to a high degree with Prometheus Rises Treasure Hunt.  Check that hunt out HERE.
  15. Make it educational: Make the treasure hunt educational by incorporating facts, trivia, or information about a specific topic. For example, you can make the treasure hunt focus on local history, geography, or science facts. This is something we try to include in all of our treasure hunts!
  16. Time management: Make sure to set a realistic time limit for the treasure hunt. Consider the number of participants, the number of clues, and the difficulty level of the clues when determining the time limit. This will prevent your participants from getting frustrated or discouraged if the treasure hunt takes too long.
  17. Weather considerations: If the treasure hunt is taking place outdoors, make sure to consider the weather conditions. Make sure to have a backup plan in case of bad weather, such as moving the treasure hunt indoors.
  18. Parental involvement: If the treasure hunt is geared towards kids, involve parents or guardians in the treasure hunt if possible. This will not only ensure safety, but also allow parents to be a part of the fun and learning experience.

Here are a few additional tips and ideas to help ensure your treasure hunt is a success and fun for all involved:

Budget: Keep in mind the budget when planning the treasure hunt. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to create a fun and exciting experience. Be creative and resourceful when it comes to creating clues and prizes.

Make it accessible for all: Be sure to consider the needs of all participants when creating the treasure hunt. Make sure it is accessible for people with disabilities or different learning styles.

Test it out: Before the treasure hunt, test it out to ensure that all the clues make sense, that the treasure is findable, and that the challenge level is appropriate for your target group of participants.

Feedback: After the treasure hunt, ask for feedback from the participants. This will help you to know what worked well and what can be improved for next time.

Have fun: Most importantly, remember to have fun! Creating a treasure hunt can be a fun and rewarding experience for both the participants in the hunt and the creators of the hunt.

By keeping these tips in mind, you can create an awesome treasure hunt that is fun, engaging and challenging for everyone involved. So turn off the TV and get to creating a treasure hunt today!
